Search Engine Optimisation

SEO Principles in Web Design

Google is the “Godzilla” of search engines and the reason why is because it is the best at what it does. What is that? Google is in the business of serving up the best possible results based on search queries. Therefore Google continually strives to improve the users experience.

Globally, there are approximately 4.6 billion active internet users that are searching for a multitude of things like information, products or services and engaging in social activity online. This begs the question. How does Google determine the best results to offer the user based on the user search request when there may be tens, hundreds or thousands of possible choices? The answer is to use a bunch of algorithms with over 200 ranking factors to give the user exactly what they are looking for. The application of these factors are know as SEO principles.

What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation – the process of improving your visibility online in order to rank your website in the search engine results page (SERP). For example, Google’s website ranking algorithm takes into account more than 255 ranking factors when assessing the quality of a webpage. To make it easier to handle, the various factors can be grouped into three pillars of SEO, Technical SEO, On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.

Each of these sub-processes deals with a number of rules and when applied together, the end result is a fully optimized website able to achieve high rankings on Google.

three pillars of seo

Technical SEO

Technical SEO refers to the process of optimizing your website for the crawling and indexing phase. Using TechSEO, you can help search engines access, crawl, interpret and index your website without error.
It is called “technical”, because it has nothing to do with the actual content of the website or with website promotion. The primary goal of TechSEO is to optimize the infrastructure of a website.

On-Page SEO

The goal of on-page-SEO, is to speak the ‘search engines language’ and help crawlers understand the meaning and context of the pages.

This is the part where we deal with keywords, structure of the page and content writing. What does organic or natural rankings mean? It means that Google will look at your website and online profile and decide for which keywords they will rank you on the first page of the search engine results.

We work on optimizing your pages for particular keywords and which keywords are used in the title tags, meta descriptions and image alt tags.

Off-Page SEO

Off-Page-SEO has to do with website promotion methods – techniques that go beyond website design and content. These techniques that are external and not done on your website. An important technique is link building, which means getting high quality backlinks in seo to your website. A few ways of doing that is by adding your website to local directory submissions, submitting a few of your articles to blog directories and posting on forums. This is a critical part of the whole process but you only have to deal with this after the other two processes are completed.

Why is SEO important?

Simply put, without optimisation your website will never be found or offered up by any search engine to prospective customers.

Think of Google or Bing as a travel agent. When you want  travel you have a destination in mind. To get there you use a travel agent. They will offer you the best options in order to ensure your experience meet or exceed your expectations. The success of your trip will ensure you return to the same travel agent the next time. The agent has acquired a loyal customer.

The same is true for a search engine company. So unless your website is a quality option, search engines will not use your services when there are so many better options to choose from!

Now that we have proved that it is absolutely necessary the question is, how do you know that the implementation has been done properly and that it's working?

After the project has been completed and you are satisfied with your website look and feel – as part of the final handover we present you with a full audit of your new website. It shows a figure out of 100 made up of each sub subsection. The test comes from a reputable outside company, Seobility.

The website audit tool helps find and solve technical errors and on-page SEO web issues in order to improve Google rankings.

The site audit includes checks of more than 300 SEO-relevant website factors. The resulting 50+ analyses are presented in three main categories:

  • Tech & Meta: Discover crawling issues, problems with meta tags, problematic URL’, and other technical errors affecting the health of your website.
  • Structure: A checklist to see whether your site is well-structured for both search engines and visitors and find problems with internal linking, anchor texts, site hierarchy, etc.
